Vornado Elevators - 1 Penn Plaza, NYC

Vornado is one of the largest owners and managers or real estate in the United States with a portfolio over 100 million square feet: DC Office, Retail Properties and Merchandise Mart. Since 2006, they are using Elumen LED down lighting solutions in a variety of applications such as elevator, corridor, lobby, and bathroom lighting.

1 Penn Plaza is the 2^nd largest commercial property in Manhattan only behind New York’s famed Empire State building. The building houses 44 high speed elevators to carry its 250,000 weekly visitors to their office destinations. Elumen’s challenge was to provide a LED-powered lighting solution to replace elevators’ current halogen lights which offer good light quality but encourages tremendous maintenance costs in energy usage and lamp replacements.

Challenges Met
· Energy Savings: Each cab was reduced from 500 watts of halogen light to 84 watts of LED lighting.
· All maintenance and lamp replacement costs have been eliminated to date, at 24 hour per day on-time the lights have been on for over 40,000 hours. 
· Developed an emergency back-up battery system which incorporates the existing battery (saving on retrofit costs) and which provides up to 25 times more light for 3 times the duration during power outages, insuring a greater sense of safety for the building's tenants.
·System designed for optimal thermal dissipation when providing light in the cab while dissipating heat outside the cab thus providing a cool cab environment and additional HVAC savings.
